Real Life Bambi

So I think I may have a real life Bambi situation with the deer. For the second time in the last two weeks there has been a lone spotted fawn in my yard. I came home from work today and there it was eating and there was no doe in sight. It makes me sad to think that it's mother may have been killed. I'm such a momma bear with all the critters in my life; I am protective even with the wild things. I hope this little one continues to safely navigate the neighborhood.

The picture is from I Can Has a Hot dog.

The Doe & Fawns First Visit

Friday evening right around 9pm the doe and her 2 fawns came to visit. They may have been around before this, but I was probably at work.

They were getting the attention of the guys across the street as well, one of whom was almost acting like a stalker and not giving them space.

My Wild Visitors

I just got done watching "The Fantastic Mr.Fox" and was paid a visit by these two gentlemen. It's a little after 9pm which is a good time to see them out and about.

We had another beautiful day and I was out trimming more dead wood from the apple trees after I got home from work. This is the first week of overtime at work and I've been staying up too late. Now it's hitting me and I'm ready to crash. I still can't believe it's June already.

The movie was good,  but I'm definitely going to have to watch it again to pick up more dialogue. It made me think of so many other great movies and performances as well, some parts were hilarious. Wes Anderson strikes again!

This, That and the Other

I had a visitor this morning before 9 o'clock, munching her way around the yard. I haven't seen her for awhile, I'm wondering if she has some little ones tucked away that will come visit as the summer progresses.

It's a bummer that it has been raining off and on all day for the Ski to Sea Race. At least there were no downpours, so most folks don't let it dampen their spirit too much.

I finished my sewing project three weeks ago, and forgot to take a picture of it until today. Being sick has completely side lined all of my projects and taking care of the yard as well. Hopefully when it gets drier at the end of the week, my energy will be better as well.

I started on a few infinity scarves and need to create the pattern to make two Bear Paw Print quilted pillow covers for the square pillows on my bed. I want to refinish the drawing table Susan sent me as well this summer. Wish me luck!

September Summer

Woody

Woody & Munchkin
The deer have been around again a lot this summer, and I really enjoy that. Boo still usually hides under the deck when they are around. Last night right before dusk I saw the two fawns heading over to Dave's backyard, the doe must have been ahead of them, because I never saw her.

And my little buddy Munchkin just couldn't resist these nice clean sheets.

Critter Day - Part Two

So a few hours after the doe and her fawns were here, one of the bucks stopped by. Woody and Munchkin went out to say hello again.

My Sweet Little Visitors

My surprise visitors today, and a sweet little visit it was. They were curious but also very cautious about Woody coming out from under the deck to greet them. I'm guessing it was the first time they saw a cat. It was definitely the first time I saw them. I didn't think I was going to see any fawns this late in the summer. The doe was here too, but she went next door kind of quickly. The two little ones were too preoccupied to follow.

Critters

Munchkin

Boo

Munchkin and Boo
The pictures look a little bit lighter than it actually seemed outside last night. I had opened up the back door to call Boo to try and get her to come in, and was surprised by our friend here.

So then Munchkin ended up sneaking out while I had the door open, and wouldn't come in. Fifteen minutes or so went by and he still wasn't coming in, and I look out the window and a second buck had come along and Munchkin was in the yard between the two. He is so curious and somewhat fearless when it comes to other animals.

Then he and Boo were so tired from their adventures that they crashed together on the bed. They are so sweet together; I also took a video of them cleaning each other right before they went to sleep - I'll post that next time.

I finally did a little yard work tonight, and need to mow the lawn. I've been so wary of being out in the yard and being stung by the yellow jackets again that things are looking pretty ragged out there.

I've been sewing and am about half way through with a blouse for myself. I cleaned and oiled my sewing machine on Friday evening. It had been sitting inactive for almost three years so it really needed it. It's an approximately 30 year old Pfaff that is still going strong.

Internet Love and Hate Story, Part Two

Buck visited Monday night, August 5th
Today's posts are brought to you with thanks to Ryan from Comcast. Bless his heart, he totally rewired the cable on the outside of the house, and to the power pole this morning.

I took the day off from work, because the appointment was scheduled between 8-10 am. He tested everything in the house first and then went and took a look outside and asked me if there had been any updates to the cable that I was aware of. I've lived in the house for 15 years, before that Mark had lived in it since at least when mom died in 1985. I don't think anything has been updated since then. He said the cable was actually broken in some spots it was so old and worn out. He was amazed the internet had worked at all, but that definitely explains why I had trouble after less than a week.

I also rented a pick up truck today from Fountain Rental so I could take some stuff to Recomp. It always feels good to purge deadwood (so to speak). I also ran some errands around town that are not easy on the bus. Then I treated myself to a burger from Boomers, which I had been thinking about for months!

I hadn't driven since I rented a car for one day September of last year, and I'm thinking that I need to start doing this every month or so, just to be able to get out and break the routine. There are so many places that I miss going now, that I used to just hop in the car and go when the mood struck me. It still kind of blows my mind that it has been a little over a year now since the car went kaput.

Some kind of Hawk that was checking out the neighbor's chickens

Visit to the Vet, and other adventures

Boo

Boo

Boo had her first trip to the vet for her annual exam since I no longer have a car. She did pretty well on the bus I have to say. I gave her two of the relaxing treats about a half hour before we left. She did pretty good; no yowling at all, and only a little bit of meowing here and there. I talked to her a lot to try and keep her calm. She was even relaxed enough to purr while the vet was handling her.
When we left and walked to the bus stop a block away I saw on the schedule that the next bus was 15 minutes yet. Well I knew I could get back into downtown in the same amount of time, so off we went. She got a little tour of downtown with a hip-level view. The walk was not hard at all, but she is 13 pounds, so I kept having to switch hands so my arm didn't get too tired. She was happy to get home, and we ended up taking a nap together with her curled up across my arm. Little bosom buddies.

On Sunday when the sun finally came out in the afternoon I got out and mowed the lawn. It was really funny, about 5 minutes after I finished, I came inside to use the bathroom. When I came back out into the kitchen I looked out the window in time to see the two bucks in front of Dave's house next door. They were about 25 feet apart and they were both doing a squat pee. Synchronized deer peeing, not something you see every day!

The Boys Are Back in Town

The boys were back this evening around 6 o'clock. And the first day lily opened on this soggy Memorial Day. I've seen a few of the pink roses on the bushes here on the south side of the house. The white mini roses off the back deck should be opening in the next few weeks.

Doe & Fawn Stop by for a Visit

Thursday evening we were visited by a doe and her fawn, and Munchkin and the fawn were quite curious about each other. I took two videos, this is the second one. They were pretty cute together.
I uploaded the video to my Picasa album this time to see how it worked. If you click on the hyperlink it will take you to the album, and all you have to do is click on the image once to start it playing. Enjoy!

Munchkin and his big friend

After I got back from getting groceries this afternoon I let the cat's out, and it didn't take long for Munchkin to head over to Dave's next door. I happened to look out the kitchen window and figured out why; he had heard the buck over in the backyard stirring around.

Munchkin

The buck was just coming around the row of evergreens and Munchkin stopped and lowered himself to the ground. The buck was cautiously trying to sniff him, and Munchkin was a little nervous too. They ended up settling down near each other for a short time.

Munchkin

I think the buck is probably 2-3 years old, and it was the first time I had seen him this summer. He hung around for a couple of hours at least. The weather turned cooler and overcast, and he just was relaxing in the peace and quiet.

My Wild Critters

This pretty girl was acting an awful lot like a pet this past week. We had a cool rainy weekend, all weekend long a week ago. And thinking that it was safe, I had been putting the food for the deer in the back yard under the Italian Prune tree. But of course the bowl ended up completely soaked, and I had to throw it out, and unfortunately that was all I had at the time.
So not finding the food in the back yard where she expected it, she came around to the front porch to where it normally is in the winter; but the cupboard was bare.....

She literally came right up on to the porch. I apologized to her, and promised I would get some the next day. So I went to bed, and the next morning I went to let Tom Cat out while I was getting ready for work. I was unlocking the door and heard noise, and when I opened the door it was in time to watch her scrambling down the steps!
It had been raining all night, so I"m thinking it might have been a combination of her getting out of the rain, and waiting for food that lead to her being there. I left work a little early just to make sure I got to the Farmer's Co-Op on time ♥

I got a different brand of food for the deer, because I went to the Co-Op in town rather than out in Ferndale. And she liked it just fine, but she wasn't the only one.......

As most know, I love squirrels and these two were too cute. They camp out right in the bowl and then were chasing each other around the porch.

Memorial Day Weekend

Munchkin, stalking a bird as usual....

Another beautiful Saturday with sunshine and warm temperatures. Yesterday when I got home from work we had a deer visiting. I sat out on the deck with the cats enjoying it, but did not grab my camera. I wish I had, Munchkin was pretty cute; he was definitely curious, but still too cautious to get too close.

Sweet Peas
My sweet pea is slowly getting more established, just not very tall yet. The basil I planted is sprouting; there are these teeny little leaves at the surface, but they are there! It's the first time I've planted any herbs, so I hope I'm able to make some pesto by the end of the summer...

Last Sunday was the last episode of Series 2 of Sherlock on Masterpiece on PBS, and it was really bittersweet, because I don't know if they will bring it back or not with the way it ended. And then Thursday night was the last episode of Doc Martin Series 5. Same situation, I don't know if there will be any future seasons, but if not, I have to say it was a really sweet ending if that ends up being the last one ever. I absolutely love that show and wish it could go on forever, but of course it can't.
Snowball Bush

I was originally going to put this planter on the front porch until the incident last month - so instead I'm really enjoying the color inside. It's a dwarf snapdragon and blue Lobelia. They seem to be doing just fine in the south window, I just need to make sure I water them every few days, just like the Nemesia.

Deer Visit

One of my deer friends dropped by when I least suspected it. I was just finishing making my dinner and went in to the living room to turn on the news and I looked over to see our friend here eating his dinner too...
The bowl of corn on the front porch has been steadily getting eaten all winter, but I was never actually seeing anyone until one night on the weekend when I was up past 11:00 in early March. I think it was a doe, and tonight this one looked to be a young buck who's antlers are just little bumps on his forehead at this point.
