Current Cartoon Favorites

I've been meaning to post some of my favorite political cartoons that have come out recently.

Sherman's Lagoon, May 28, 2012

I love Sherman's Lagoon, and I thought they pulled this one off well.

I read all of the my cartoons online now that I only buy the newspaper on Sundays. Two of these cartoonists are on the Go Comics website. The website has quite a few cartoons and you can log in and register and save your favorites.

I read a brief bit on The Huffington Post this afternoon that Donald Trump has proclaimed himself to be Mitt Romney's Vice Presidential Pick. His ego will never cease to amaze and amuse me.
Here it is:

'Usually known for his eloquence and reserve, Donald Trump bombastically touted himself as Mitt Romney's vice president. Assuredly, he feels that if the "Seinfeld" chick can get elected in that HBO documentary, anyone can.'

Awake Finale

This past Thursday was also the finale of the NBC TV series "Awake". It was a two part finale, and in the first part, everything looked like it was going to end badly for the lead character, Detective Michael Britten played by Jason Isaacs.

When they made the show, they didn't know that it was not going to go past the first season. I like happy endings, and so given the fact that it was the ending completely, I was glad for how it turned out. It had the potential to go on, but it also had a complete story arc, so that it can stand on it's own, almost like a mini-series.

The show was a mind-bending concept, and I think every single episode was very well done. Because it was on late on Thursday nights, I ended up watching all of the episodes online on NBC.com. I don't know how long they will still make them available there, but I'm assuming it will end up being available on DVD.

The story-line was that the main character was in a car accident with his family, and he lived in two realities after that; one where his wife died in the accident, and the other where his son died. He would go to sleep, and wake up in the alternate reality, with a different partner on the police force for each 'reality'.

I won't give away the ending, but I was thinking that whether it is all in his head or not, at least he came to a 'happy' place where he could finally be at peace. It all reminded me of the end of the movie "Brazil" directed by Terry Gilliam. Open to interpretation depending on your point of view.

Memorial Day Weekend

Munchkin, stalking a bird as usual....

Another beautiful Saturday with sunshine and warm temperatures. Yesterday when I got home from work we had a deer visiting. I sat out on the deck with the cats enjoying it, but did not grab my camera. I wish I had, Munchkin was pretty cute; he was definitely curious, but still too cautious to get too close.

Sweet Peas
My sweet pea is slowly getting more established, just not very tall yet. The basil I planted is sprouting; there are these teeny little leaves at the surface, but they are there! It's the first time I've planted any herbs, so I hope I'm able to make some pesto by the end of the summer...

Last Sunday was the last episode of Series 2 of Sherlock on Masterpiece on PBS, and it was really bittersweet, because I don't know if they will bring it back or not with the way it ended. And then Thursday night was the last episode of Doc Martin Series 5. Same situation, I don't know if there will be any future seasons, but if not, I have to say it was a really sweet ending if that ends up being the last one ever. I absolutely love that show and wish it could go on forever, but of course it can't.
Snowball Bush

I was originally going to put this planter on the front porch until the incident last month - so instead I'm really enjoying the color inside. It's a dwarf snapdragon and blue Lobelia. They seem to be doing just fine in the south window, I just need to make sure I water them every few days, just like the Nemesia.

A Sunny Saturday

Pauline - Saturday, May 19th

Tom Cat - Saturday, May 19th
It was such a nice week weather-wise, and I'm glad I spent most of the day working in the yard and enjoying the sunshine with the cats before the weather turned.
After mowing, I had to trim a few sections of the apple trees that were covered in tent worms; those things are so disgusting. The trees used to get them really bad a long time ago, so I'm glad it was just a few spots, and within arms length for me to take care of it.

I worked a little on sanding one of the sections of the desk that I've been working on for 3 years now.
I hope I can get it finished this summer, at least the sanding and oiling of the wood. I can always assemble it inside once the weather turns cold in the fall if it comes down to it. Then it will create the dilemma of what to do with the table that is in it's place.

I am getting ready to watch the last episode of Series 2 of Sherlock in a few minutes; I think it's going to be a nail biter. I was really bummed this past week when I saw that NBC is not renewing 'Awake'. Just like when Detroit 1-8-7 was cancelled by ABC, it's really frustrating to see something so well done getting tossed out in favor of the crap that will be on in it's place.

Flowers

Kelly's Christmas Cactus

My Lilac
I had accidently broken two sections of my large Christmas Cactus this winter and decided to try and root them in water. I've only ever done that with ivies so I had no idea whether it would work.
It did, and I finally potted it to eventually give to Kelly at work, but I want to make sure it is healthy and established before I give it to her. It's been cool seeing the new growth, I potted it about a month ago, and I think it's doing really well. The new growth is kind of a burgundy-ish color, and I counted 7 new sections.

And I have been really enjoying my Lilac this spring; I had clipped several off to bring inside to enjoy at home and at work. I love the fragrance and think they are beautiful too. I wish it would grow taller faster, but am still pleased that it blooms every year and is healthy.

Mother's Day Weekend

What a gorgeous weekend! I worked out in the yard as much as I could both days. I dismantled the section of the compost Bin that fell down over the winter. I want to try and re-use a couple of the boards to repair a few spots where other ones rotted away and fell off.
Early on yesterday Tomcat was on the porch stalking a baby squirrel, and both of them got frightened by the mail carrier. Tomcat jumped off the porch and the squirrel first climbed up on top of the bird feeder, and then from there jumped into the hanging planter that is about a foot away.

The baby is the one a few feet up from the ground.

I was watching from the living room, and could tell this little one could not figure a way out of that pickle. So I slowly walked up and lifted the whole pot and set it down on the ledge of the porch. Well that poor little thing was hanging on to the planter for dear life scared out of it's mind, and was frozen. I walked back inside and watched a few minutes more from the living room, but it was not going anywhere.

I went out there again, and Woody followed me out and jumped up on the ledge, but seemed to be oblivious to the squirrel at first, and I ended up kind of tilting the pot, and it finally jumped out. .

Woody was just more curious than anything at that point and was checking it out, but not hunting it. It finally went down the side of the porch and around the side of the house, where Munchkin stinker that he is, proceed to stalk it. Thankfully he didn't catch up with it.

A little later the baby and apparently both parents were all up in the apple trees in the backyard and then Boo was the stalker. She didn't do any harm either, but I got a few pictures of that encounter. i didn't realize until I looked at the first picture on the computer that one of the squirrels must have been just a few feet away from her in the grass.

Sunny Weekend for the Cats

Boo and Woody

It didn't last long, but I got this picture before Woody got up and walked away to check something out in the yard.
That 'super-moon' last night was beautiful, and it was clear and sunny from the start today.

Munchkin and Squirrel

Munchkin was in fine form yesterday playing with his squirrel buddy. I think he really doesn't want to do them any harm - it's all about the chase.
There was a couple walking down the alley that scared the squirrel after I took this picture. It ran right past Munchkin, and he just was crouching even lower to the ground when they walked past, that he didn't even turn to look at the squirrel...

The Daily Show

Madeline Albright

Of course as usual on my weekend I'm playing catch-up. I am trying to catch up on The Daily Show from last week through this week.  I just watched a two part interview he had with Madeline Albright from April 24th, and it was pretty good. Here is the link for part one  and the link for part two
