Hello 2020

Pearls Before Swine Comic Strip for January 01, 2020
Pearls Before Swine - January 1, 2020

But seriously folks...

2019 Christmas Tree
So I'm starting off the year with the hope that 2020 will bring wonderful new things. 2019 was a beyond busy year at work, which ended with me being laid off after 8 1/2 years, less than 2 weeks before Christmas. I was definitely very bitter to begin with, for many reasons, but I have slowly let it go, with the belief that I deserve to be somewhere that I am valued, and at the end, I wasn't.

I had a quiet Christmas with the cats, and today was the same - but today we had some beautiful sunshine for the first half of the day, and I appreciated it, and hope that is a good sign for the rest of 2020. I will be able to take a little "me" time for a short while, and I am looking forward to spring and hoping that wherever I land next work-wise I will be able to enjoy more of the summer than I did last year, and really for the last 8 years to be honest.

Happy New Year 2019

Baby Blues - January 2, 2019

So obviously I don't post very often. I intended to do a thoughtful post reflecting on 2018, and looking ahead to 2019 on New Year's Eve, and clearly that didn't happen. So here I am after a long day of work, and running an errand after work, and it's now 12 hours after I left the house for the day.... and I'm posting a comic strip that really hit my funny bone because it was so relateable.

After I got home, and started to get settled in, I had to move the couch to retrieve not one, but two toy mice the cats were playing with when I encountered a small pile of pine needles from the Christmas tree! I got a Christmas tree on the Saturday right before Christmas - this was the first tree I've had in around 20 years. I was kinda bummed that it didn't last longer, but I had to take it outside on New Year's eve because it was dropping so many needles. I thoroughly vacuumed the living room (or so I thought), but, well, you get the picture.

I really enjoyed the tree for the short time I had it. I really love the smell of a real tree, and it was nice to see ornaments that have been boxed up for what seemed like forever. Some ornaments from childhood along with some I got for myself or received over the last 30 years. This was the first tree that all of my cats had experienced and they actually did pretty good at not messing with it, but I did manage to find two small ornaments on the floor as I was cleaning up.

So long story short, I'm alive, my days are just long with work, and so I'm not on the computer sharing stuff that much because it's a lower priority with the little free time I seem to have. I do post on my Instagram because it's convenient to do on my phone, it's where I do most of my web-surfing to get the news and entertainment. I am doing okay, and like everyone else, I'm looking forward to spring and working in the garden and seeing everything new that I planted last year.

The cats are all doing okay; they all got to the vet in September, and Munchkin was diagnosed with Diabetes, but he's doing much better now that he is getting insulin shots twice a day. Tommy is feeling older lately, but he's at least 16, so it's to be expected.

I hope everyone that reads this is doing well, and forgives me that I'm not a prolific writer.
Happy New Year! Maria

Happy Thanksgiving 2016

Just a short post to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving on this blustery day here in the great Pacific Northwest ☺ I have been invited to dinner at my friend Marisa's home with her husband Dominic and assorted friends and family members. Mom's pumpkin pie is ready to go.

I took the video of Boo yesterday, the cats are doing well, and I am trying to slowly gear up for Christmas. I am hosting the Cookie Party for the first time this year, and I want it to be nice.

This Mutts comic strip is the story of my life ☺

Catching Up

We had the Around the Corner picnic at Hovander earlier this month and the weather was good. It's been hot lately, but today was cool with crazy wind  - totally blew my plan to keep digging out the new flower bed.

I have Delphiniums and a few roses to plant,  and have more roses and some tulips on order from Zulily. The soil out here is really nice,  but I'm encountering rocks and other stuff that is slowing down the process. Apparently people buried and or burned and buried their garbage in the yard in the good old days. I've found broken glass, chunks of charcoal wood and even a whole brick! So I'm sifting as I go  (Hi Hoe, Hi Hoe).

Here are some pictures from this month.

Lazy Sunday

Here are some more pics from recent days/weeks around the new place. I'm really enjoying it since we finally have some fairly consistent warm weather around here. The cats are really having a lazy Sunday today.

Merry Christmas 2015

I hope everyone had a great day. Quiet one for me here - I took a relaxed approach to the day. We got a bit of sunshine later in the afternoon which was much appreciated after all the rain we've been having.

I roasted a chicken with stuffing and will have my pumpkin pie in a bit. I took these pictures of the cats all snuggled up last night. Boo & Munchkin snuggle a lot, but not usually in that chair. And Tom Cat always looks so sweet when he sleeps. Happy New Year everyone!

Happy National Cat Day!

For #throwbackthursday and #nationalcatday I posted this picture of Woody and Boo from March 2014 on Instagram this morning.  Little did I know that he would be gone from this world a few months later. I loved him so much, he was so beautiful, loyal and a big cuddle bug.

Crazy Busy June

The Day Lilies at the height of their glory earlier this month

One of my two mixed planters on the front porch
Oh man, what a crazy month it's been. Work has been very busy and it will get even worse over the next couple of weeks. I'm finally taking a few moments out to post a few pictures to let anyone out there know I'm still around ☺

I lucked out with some really healthy annuals that I bought for the front porch, and the fuchsia Geranium has actually been wintered indoors for a couple of years I think.

What a gorgeous day

It got up to 71° today - absolutely beautiful out this afternoon. Our mild weather has continued a lot longer than I thought it would. It looks like that may come to an end in the next few weeks,  but for now, I'm going to enjoy it!

I did a lot of laundry this weekend and had the doors open for the fresh air and warmth today. Half way through the afternoon Boo brought me a big surprise; a live snake. I was a bit shaken up until I was able to get it outside.

For a little history here;  when I first moved to Bellingham in 1987,  I lived in this house for 3 years while my brother Mark lived in Seattle. I had 2 cats at the time - Aretha and Ellwood. Twice in one summer Aretha brought a live snake into the house. The first time it didn't look alive and after I swept it out the front door it slithered away. The second time I knew better and I got that thing out of the house in less than a minute!

Boo & Munchkin have brought those teeny little green frogs into the house many times,  and I thought that's what she had today. She came into the living room and dropped something out of her mouth and started trilling like she does when she has a frog. This was no frog. ...

Is this a character trait of Tortoiseshell Calicos that nobody ever told me about?!

Watch Out, She's Got A Whisk!

Mother Nature saved the downpour for the first day back after the Labor Day weekend, so now I have no excuse not to finally post about ice cream.

My journey to making my own ice cream started with my Uncle Ralph in Delaware Ohio. When I was a kid, going to see my Uncle Ralph & Aunt Eloise was such a treat in so many different ways, but literally one of them was that he made ice cream.

My brother Matt, Uncle Ralph & my sister Melissa
He had the old kind of ice cream maker that was a wood exterior with a ceramic crock that the batter went in. It was hand cranked where you used rock salt and ice, and a lot of elbow grease. He only ever made vanilla and would sometimes add cherries, but oh my gosh, it was the best flavor and you savored every spoonful.

Less than 10 years ago I bought a ice cream bowl attachment to go with my Kitchen Aid stand mixer and my ice cream making adventures began. I mailed my cousin Barb, and asked if she had her dad's ice cream recipe. The one that she sent me made a huge amount, and honestly did not come out like I remember it, so I started experimenting.

I went online and started looking at different recipes and comparing similarities in terms of ingredients and quantities and after just a few attempts I hit on what I consider my 'master' recipe that is now the base for several yummy variations. I also ended up giving away the Kitchen Aid attachment and got a Cuisinart Ice Cream maker which is so much easier to use I should have just spent my money on it in the first place. Mine is a 1 & 1/2 quart capacity, so my recipes are based on that.

Also I should state, that there are some pretty technical qualifications to Ice Cream. According to the FDA it must contain at least 10% milk fat. I like to use half and half, so mine is probably closer to ice milk than ice cream, but it has the texture and consistency that I like. So if you end up trying this, you could use whipping cream instead, or a combination if you want it creamier.

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

1 quart Half & Half
1 cup sugar
pinch of salt
1 whole vanilla bean
3 egg yolks

  • In a medium size bowl I whisk together one fourth (1/4 cup) of the sugar and the egg yolks and set aside.
  • In a medium size saucepan I whisk together the other 3/4 cup of sugar and half of the Half & Half with the salt. Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise and add to the pan, then whisk over medium heat until it starts to steam. Remove the bean and set aside for a moment.
  • Pull the pan off the heat and ladle about a cup of the steamed milk into the eggs yolks and quickly whisk until smooth. Add that mixture back into the saucepan and continue whisking over medium heat until the batter thickens enough to coat the back of a metal spoon, being careful not to boil.
  • Pull the pan off the heat and carefully scrape the vanilla bean contents into the batter, add the remaining Half & Half and chill for several hours or overnight and process in the ice cream maker according to directions (which for mine takes about 20 minutes).
So the first variation I made to this was to make Coffee ice cream, and so I did everything as above, but added 2 tablespoons of Medalia d'Oro Instant Espresso powder which I added to the warm batter before I pour in the rest of the chilled Half & Half. I do this with a flat whisk to avoid any lumping.

Another variation is to make it without the vanilla bean, but instead add 1 tablespoon of lemon extract. Yet another is to make it without the vanilla bean and add 1 tablespoon of peppermint extract, and then add chocolate shavings to make mint "chocolate-chip". The chocolate shavings are also a nice addition to the coffee.......

I'll post two more recipes in the near future. I'm signing off for now, but not without first posting my joke picture that I put together for the blog profile we did at work a year or so ago. Gotta love those phone apps!

Hot Dogs and Cool Cats

I'm on I Can Has a Hotdog part of the I Can Has Cheezburger website and saw this video - oh my gosh! It's just 15 seconds of absolute sweetness with a baby and a puppy that looks just like Snoopy

Gladiolus

Munchkin & Boo

I treated myself to some Gladiolus from Haggen this morning when I got my groceries. It was slim pickings in terms of the color selection, but these were beautiful, so it didn't matter.

It is a gorgeous day, warm but with a great breeze so the house has been cool enough to be comfortable. I had a really hard time getting to sleep last night. I'm not sure why, but I just woke up from an hour and half nap making up for it. A waste of the sunshine, but if I have the opportunity, I will give in, because I needed it. we are due for the whole rest of the week to be warm & sunny.

Good Day for a Catnap

The sun is just starting to peek out after it's been raining since this morning. Boo & Munchkin curled up together for a short while. They don't do that as much as they did when he was still a little kitten.
