| 2019 Christmas Tree |
So I'm starting off the year with the hope that 2020 will bring wonderful new things. 2019 was a beyond busy year at work, which ended with me being laid off after 8 1/2 years, less than 2 weeks before Christmas. I was definitely very bitter to begin with, for many reasons, but I have slowly let it go, with the belief that I deserve to be somewhere that I am valued, and at the end, I wasn't.
I had a quiet Christmas with the cats, and today was the same - but today we had some beautiful sunshine for the first half of the day, and I appreciated it, and hope that is a good sign for the rest of 2020. I will be able to take a little "me" time for a short while, and I am looking forward to spring and hoping that wherever I land next work-wise I will be able to enjoy more of the summer than I did last year, and really for the last 8 years to be honest.

Well, February was a really rough month to say the least. Here in Whatcom County we had overnight (and quite a few day time) temperatures below freezing for the whole entire month. As I right this there is still snow on the ground around my house and in piles around the county, accumulated from several snow storms from over three weeks ago. I joke that it was like having a Michigan winter all in one month. We also had several very strong wind storms, and the cause of most of this cold is air coming down from the arctic via the Fraser River Valley in British Columbia.
My neighbors lost a 50 foot+ evergreen, and my landlords had half of their 20 foot+ lilac bush split in half. I was so excited in January starting to see things show signs of life for spring, and now I'm wondering if any of the spring bloomers are going to survive this brutal cold. The other fun was catching a cold at the start of the month that caused me to miss a few days work and total sapped my energy for at least two weeks. Like a lot of folks, I am really, really looking forward to spring and it warming up. I just started my first seeds this afternoon, my hope for the future, Cherry Rose Nasturtiums ☺

Happy New Year 2019

So obviously I don't post very often. I intended to do a thoughtful post reflecting on 2018, and looking ahead to 2019 on New Year's Eve, and clearly that didn't happen. So here I am after a long day of work, and running an errand after work, and it's now 12 hours after I left the house for the day.... and I'm posting a comic strip that really hit my funny bone because it was so relateable.
After I got home, and started to get settled in, I had to move the couch to retrieve not one, but two toy mice the cats were playing with when I encountered a small pile of pine needles from the Christmas tree! I got a Christmas tree on the Saturday right before Christmas - this was the first tree I've had in around 20 years. I was kinda bummed that it didn't last longer, but I had to take it outside on New Year's eve because it was dropping so many needles. I thoroughly vacuumed the living room (or so I thought), but, well, you get the picture.
I really enjoyed the tree for the short time I had it. I really love the smell of a real tree, and it was nice to see ornaments that have been boxed up for what seemed like forever. Some ornaments from childhood along with some I got for myself or received over the last 30 years. This was the first tree that all of my cats had experienced and they actually did pretty good at not messing with it, but I did manage to find two small ornaments on the floor as I was cleaning up.
The cats are all doing okay; they all got to the vet in September, and Munchkin was diagnosed with Diabetes, but he's doing much better now that he is getting insulin shots twice a day. Tommy is feeling older lately, but he's at least 16, so it's to be expected.
I hope everyone that reads this is doing well, and forgives me that I'm not a prolific writer.

Memorial Day Weekend 2017

Nothing major to report, I am enjoying the beautiful weather we are having for this Memorial Day Weekend, which is warmer and drier than what we normally get. The flower beds are coming along, my Honeysuckle Vine is just starting to bloom, and the Delphiniums I planted last year are coming along nicely.
Last weekend I got a single light pink blooming Peony, and am probably going to start digging a spot to plant it this weekend. I also got a pink Salvia and planted that in the back with the goal of attracting more Humming Birds, and it's working already! The Sweet Pea seeds I started in doors did well, and I planted those several weeks ago, and am continuing to try and train them up the bamboo stakes. I have some Lupines I started from seed as well, but not early enough. They are definitely too small to bloom this year, but I am hoping they grow and develop into nice healthy plants for next year.

Spring 2017
We had a chilly but mostly sunny day today, the last day of winter. I'm happy to report that it looks like the majority of what I planted last year survived our rough winter. I'm extra excited because the tulips I planted are all coming up - this will be a first for me.
Yesterday when I was waiting to catch the bus into town around noon, three Trumpeter Swans flew right overhead. So cool. Here is a picture of the day lilies from the last week, and today's Mutts comic strip, enjoy!

I haven't been posting as much as normal here on the blog, but have been posting pictures on Instagram several times a week. I'm gearing up for the holiday's and will be making a lot of treats soon so am starting to get organized for that and plot things out. With the time change it's still a little bit of a struggle to get motivated to do some things now that it's dark so early in the evening.

The lone bloom on my big Christmas Cactus started to open yesterday, but I'm not complaining, usually it's not blooming at Christmas at all. This has been a very somber month for me, so I will take any small joys I can get. I am thankful for my health and the roof over my head, and my feline family that always accepts my love, no questions asked.
And special thanks to Steve & Naomi for inviting me over for a small Christmas Eve dinner last night on Humboldt Street before they headed out to Lummi Island for church.
I've been saving up all these recent funnies for today. Earl in the Pickles comic could have been written about me and my deep abiding love for eggnog ☺
