Teach Our Children Well

I read a very thoughtful blog post on The Huffington Post two days ago about teaching values to our sons to respect women. The author is Jim Wallis whom I had never heard of before, and even though he is apparently well known as a religious based writer, the article was pretty straight forward about the values of respecting women as being universal.
The more I think about the problem, I think he is 100% right that the biggest force for change starts in the home and the values we learn from our parents. I always give credit to mom & dad for the values and ethics that have informed my adulthood. If you like Jim's article, please pass it along.

The Supreme Court & Gay Marriage

I saw this online tonight, it's a picture of someone's placard that was in Washington D.C. this week outside the Supreme Court. I love it. Obviously they have a great sense of humor, and in a very simple way they are getting the point across.

I'm not gay, I don't spend my time thinking about how other people have sex, and I have no earthly reason to say that somebody that is gay doesn't have the right to be legally joined as a couple with another person of the same sex. 

When we have so many other real problems in this world to think about, I really don't understand why so many people are obsessed with sticking it to a whole group of people simply because they  are 'different'. I don't see it as any different than denying blacks the right to use the same water fountain or sit at the front of the bus, or vote  They are both based on prejudice.
The argument that gay couples are crumbling the foundation of marriage in this country is hilarious - heterosexual couples are doing just fine at that without any help from gays. Straight couples divorce at a high rate, and too many abuse their spouse and / or children, so spare me any Ozzie & Harriet version of 'traditional' marriage.
I don't have any specific statistics to refer to, but my guess is that most rape's in this country and the world for that matter, are committed by 'straight' men. So the argument about our society going in the toilet because of gays coming out of the closet just doesn't fly with me. It's time for us as a society to deal with reality instead of an imagined reality, and then hopefully we would actually be as enlightened as we should be for how long we have been on this planet.

Spring is Here!

So of course two days into Spring and we had 10-15 minutes of pretty snowfall when I was at work Friday. It didn't stick, but it was pretty to watch. Mother Nature doesn't go by our calendar...

I love the spring flowers, so many things starting to bloom and my day lilies are about a foot high now. We had such a beautiful sunny day yesterday, just a bit chilly. The lawn looks like a jungle, and I really should mow, but it is still too damp, and I don't like mowing with a chilly breeze.

But anyways this cartoon is so totally me - my legs are as white as the driven snow!.

Downton Abbey Marathon

There is going to be a Downton Abbey Season 3 marathon on the Seattle PBS station KCTS 9, this Sunday from noon to 10:30!

Christmas Cactus

It's been a while (obviously) since my last post. Saturday the 9th was a gorgeous day, and I spent the afternoon with Steve & Naomi at a birthday potluck for our mutual friend Don.
As usual Don was grilling some beautiful and tasty salmon from his catch in Alaska. There was a good crowd and the weather couldn't have been better for early March around here.

This past Saturday I had lunch with Naomi and her grandson Chase, and returned their house-key following a week of cat sitting for her and Steve while they went to sunny Arizona for her dad's 80th birthday. It was wet here, but turned out beautiful on Sunday morning. And as you can see, I have some flowers blooming. The ivy geranium has wintered indoors for two years in a row.

Tucker

Jimi and Tucker live downtown, and are sweet as can be. And as Naomi points out - they love me ♥
They have always been good boys when I cat sit, and love treat time, and Tucker told me in no uncertain terms when he was ready to get his drink out of the bathtub faucet....



Jimi loves to rub his head up against you, and has a great purr and very soft fur. My little buddies - I love them right back ☺

Get Fuzzy - March 2 2013

March is coming in like a lion here, so I'm hoping it will go out like a lamb and we will transition in to a early spring. Very wet this afternoon, and as usual I am falling behind in what I need to get done....

Sherman's Lagoon - February 27 2013

I have noticed that the trees and shrubs are starting to get leaf buds. My Rose in the back yard is really leafing out as of this week and the Day Lilies are really starting to get tall after it has warmed up after the last freeze. And my Hydrangea is starting to leaf out as well.

Christmas Cactus - Sunday, March 3rd

I'm going to start my Sweet Peas inside very soon, and have already shifted one of my Geraniums that I winter indoors to the front porch to get acclimated.

And my red Christmas Cactus is blooming and budding right now and the larger pink one has just started to bud. The Christmas Cactus I got started for my supervisor Kelly at work was blooming before mine. She is so excited that she hasn't killed it, I'm happy for her that it is blooming twice like mine♥
